What should you bring to a Sound Bath?!

I hope this blog post finds you well and January is offering you the space and quiet that befits midwinter?

Sound is having a bit of a moment right now, as awareness of the relaxation and wellbeing benefits of resting in a spa of sound becomes more well known.

If you have never been to a sound bath you may have a fair few questions about what you may expect to happen, and also what you need to take with you! I first went to a sound bath at the World Yoga Festival a number of years ago, and I confess I went along because it was the weirdest thing I could see on the programme and I was curious! I had never heard of sound baths and I confess I had a little bit of concern about what it would involve, but as I was at a festival I figured that if I hated it I could just sneak out the side of the giant tent! All I had was my yoga mat and a water bottle so I couldn't worry too much about what to bring - and on a hot summers day that was all I needed. Suffice to say I did not sneak out the side of the tent but instead began my love affair with sound baths!

Essentially a sound bath is a chance to just lie back and take time out – it is like a kind of sonic-spa! You make yourself comfortable and are guided into a relaxed state with a lovely guided meditation, and then various sound healing instruments are played. These are not played to make a tune, and that is deliberate. If there is a tune your mind starts to predict and sing a long, and the idea of the sound bath is to quieten the mind and allow it to slow down. In fact studies show that the brain slips into alpha brainwave (associated with daydreaming, meditating or resting) and even theta brainwave (found in deep relaxation, inward focus and during REM sleep) states during sound baths. I use a mixture of Crystal singing bowls, Tibetan singing bowls, rainsticks, ocean drums, and chimes - amongst other sound healing instruments. You may also enjoy some lovely essential oils during your sound bath too to enhance the experience.

After our sound bath we enjoy homemade bliss balls and fresh fruit to help ground us, and there are always oracle cards if you fancy a bit of guidance. All this takes place in an oasis of seasonal flowers and fairy lights.

If this sounds like something that would be nice to indulge in then you may be wondering what do you need to take with you to a sound bath? Well you need to be prepared to be comfy and cosy for a while, and to do that I recommend the following:

1) A yoga mat or camping mat - something to keep you comfortable whilst we lie down on the floor.

2) Cushions or pillows! For behind your head - but also, it can be lovely to have a pillow (or a yoga bolster) under your knees or thighs, it helps to keep the lower back comfortable whilst lying down

3) a blanket (or two) to keep you nice and warm

4) and on the topic of nice and warm – some warm furry socks, even in the summer, when you are at rest your temperature drops quickly and having cosy toes is always a good thing.

5) An eye pillow or eye mask can be a nice to help you relax and go inwards.

6) Bring a bottle of water! It is really important to rehydrate after your sound bath.

Sound baths are a lovely meditative way to relax, they help manage stress, anxiety and insomnia and are great for simply relaxing and unwinding. The peace they bring can help create mental clarity. If you think this is something you are interested in then you are very welcome to join us in Wokingham, Berkshire for some friendly, welcoming sound bath experiences.
